Notes on the Fly: Brevard College
*College campus tours are packed with information and always an amazing experience. In my "notes on the fly" blog, I will be sharing facts about the college/university that I write "on the fly" during my visits.*
Brevard College, Brevard North Carolina
Experiential learning - direct experience with ideas or theories and then successful application of learning. Starts in freshman year.
Classes are small. 751 students - max 854. New residence hall opening. Adding small graduate programs - experiential in nature.
Surroundings lend itself to experiential learning. Natural resources and community partnerships to give students opportunities to experience their interests.
Collaboration, project based learning, social, outdoorsy. Not a place where students can be anonymous. Faculty and staff are accessible.
Assessments are done for experiential classes.
1:1 with professors - high touch
Majors: undecided, criminal justice, outdoor leadership and the outdoor industry. Must do 21 day expedition. Business and organizational leadership. Psychology.
Great place for the student who wants to by an artist but study physics.
Straightforward application process. Visiting the campus is instrumental in deciding to come here. Critical part of the application process
Test optional - 3 short answer questions. Based on the Wake Forest model.
$40,650 - avg cost is around 6K a year.
3.2 gpa, 21 ACT, 1100 SAT Strong b+ student
Student support - success mentors monitor class attendance, mid term grades, FAFSA completion rates, payment of bills, first year experience student mentor and faculty mentor. Someone is designated to work with LD students.
Food is done in-house. Allows for flexibility in dining.
Community based organizations - 4-H, Homeless issues, animal shelters, mentor programs.Students are encouraged to serve in the community. Some classes. Require community service, some scholarships require it as well.
